Robyn K. Pinilla is an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at The University of Texas at El Paso. She earned her Ph.D. in Education at Southern Methodist University, focusing her research on early childhood mathematics learning, spatial reasoning, and teacher education. As a former early childhood special education teacher and school administrator, Robyn’s research broadly examines early childhood mathematics teacher education and identity. More specifically, she has investigated how early grades educators teach spatial reasoning skills through their mathematics curriculum within their situated contexts, meaning as responsive to the place, space, and children with whom they share a classroom. In her dissertation work, Robyn used content analysis and case study methods to define a framework of spatial reasoning skills, align those skills with common early grades curriculum standards, and work with teachers to understand how they teach those skills. Resulting work was published in Frontiers in Education, with additional manuscripts under review. Robyn has shared research through SIG RME at annual AERA meetings beginning in 2022, and presents regularly at Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) meetings. She serves as Early Childhood Mathematics Teacher Educators community circle leader for AMTE, was a fellow in the 2024 cohort of the Service, Teaching, and Research (STaR) program within AMTE, and has served in several roles in the executive committee for AERA’s Division H (accountability, assessment, and research in the schools), including Graduate Student Representative, Mentorship Committee Co-Chair, and Chair of the Social Reception Committee.
